The third-level discipline has also beenformed and continuously improved. At present, otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery has demonstratedunique advantages in dealing with diseasesinvolving cross-discipline anatomical areas such asanterior skull base, lateral skull base and neck. Inthe molecular genetics research of deafness, not onlymore than 400 kinds of deafness-related genes havebeen located, but also the primary prevention ofdeafness has been successively carried out in clinicalpractice; the artificial hearing technology has beencontinuously improved; the diagnosis and treatmentof vertigo and dizziness have made important breakthroughs;the research on the mechanism of allergicrhinitis as well as the diagnosis and treatment techniquesfor allergic rhinitis have been continuouslydeveloping; there are also many new understandingsof the mechanism, internal classifi cation and precisetreatment of nasal-sinusitis. The treatment principlesand treatment methods have also been improved; The pathogenesis and treatment strategy of OSAHShave been continuously improved; the targeted therapyand comprehensive treatment of head and necktumors have also made great progress; there are alsonew understandings and advances in clinical esophagealupper airway refl ux disease and voice medicine. In the training of undergraduate, postgraduateand resident standardized training, the textbook systemwith Chinese characteristics has made great contributionsto the cultivation of talents. The teachingof otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery hasmany diffi culties: (1) Ear, nose, pharynx, larynx, andtracheal esophagus are all narrow cavity structureswith fi ne anatomy and complex functions, which arediffi cult to understand during the learning process.(2) The otolaryngology-head and neck surgery contentis almost never involved in the basic medicalpre-study, so students need to spend more time andenergy when learning. (3) The course content is quitea lot, whereas the teaching hours are relatively less.(4) The clinical practice time is limited, so it is diffi -cult to master the theoretical study and clinical skillssuffi ciently. Therefore, in the preparation of the Chineseversion of this Otorhinolaryngology-Head andNeck Surgery textbook, after years of tempering, themain content including the basic diseases, acute andsevere diseases, representative tumors and systemicrelated diseases have been formed, and the maturediagnosis and treatment of the subject is appropriatelyintroduced. The newly developed textbook writingsystem has been improved in the revision. In the actualapplication process, it has also been recognizedby the majority of teachers and students. However, with the continuous extension of medical educationand the development of the times, on the one hand,in order to increase the international perspective ofChinese medical students, on the other hand, for thetraining needs of international students, the prepara- tion of a scientifi c and practical English textbook isespecially urgent. In the preparation of English textbooks, wemust consider the needs of international studentswho grow up in the English context, and also takeinto account the original system characteristics ofChinese medical education. Under the joint promotionof People’s Medical Publishing House and theeditor-in-chief of the book, it was fi nally determinedthat the Ballenger’s Otorhinolaryngology Head andNeck Surgery was used as a blueprint, and appropriateadaptation and reduction were carried out to forman English version of the Otorhinolaryngology-Headand Neck Surgery textbook. The reasons for choosingthis book are: (1) Comprehensive content: thisbook basically covers all the basic and clinical aspectsof otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery.(2) Scientific: its viewpoint is scientific, accurate, and has strong authority. (3) Moderate elaboration:its content description is moderate and suitable formedical students and postgraduate students. (4) Fluentwriting: the book shows scientific rigor in textdescription, smooth language, and good readability.(5) Beautiful illustrations: The lines of hand-drawnillustrations are exquisite and beautiful, and thephotos are also chosen quite properly. The rewritingof this textbook follows the following principles:(1) The content requirements follow the principlesof “three basics” “fi ve qualities” and “three specifics”to meet the needs of undergraduate teachingobjectives. Some content has been deleted such astoo basic knowledge or too detailed surgery-relateddescription. (2) The Chinese version of the textbookshould be referred to as far as possible in the cataloguesystem, but it is not required to be completelyconsistent and corresponding. For example, thewhole textbook will still be arranged in the order ofear, nose, pharynx, larynx, tracheal esophagus andneck disease, but the framework will be only listedin the form of diff erent chapters just as the originalbook, which is unlike the Chinese textbook cataloguewith the framework of chapter-chapter-section-section. (3) Appropriate deletion and retentionof the content beyond the medical students’ syllabusbas been made according to clinical knowledge keypoints. For example, the basics of audiology, tumormolecular biology, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, rhinoplasty, etc. has been cut down, while the contentsrelated to oral tumors, head and neck hemangiomaand malformations, laryngotracheal stenosisand so on have been moderately preserved. (4) Aftereach chapter, a list of terminology in English andChinese is added. The number of terms for eachchapter is about 5 accordingly; reviewing questionsfor each chapter are added, covering the key contentsof this chapter and the practicing doctors’ test points;references and recommended reading materials areretained after each chapter for extended learning. Thanks to Prof. P. ASHLEY WACKYM andProf. JAMES B. SNOW, JR for their masterpieceson the comprehensive top-level design and arrangementof the book, making it a rare classic work inotorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Thanksto the rigorous and serious scientifi c attitude and professionalismof the original editorial board, this bookhas become a professional guide book that peoplecan’t put it down. We also appreciate the meticulousproduction of the original picture drawing, whichmakes the book more vivid, greatly increasing thereadability of the work. It is on this excellent basisthat we are able to carry out the subsequent rewritingwork smoothly. Since this textbook is the firstadaptation version of the original English textbook,it is inevitable that there are improper descriptions, arrangements or omissions. We sincerely appreciatethat the readers provide valuable comments for furtherimprovement.
